This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

We present a dare for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy the horror genre: Get comfortable with your partner and stream Together. The 2025 indie hit has now made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. At first glance, it could look like conventional body horror, but within Together lies a deep contemplation about the ways we decide to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together represents the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for a decade. Having wed in reality in 2017, the two stars infuse a particular energy to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The story starts when Millie and Tim move from the urban environment to the rural area for her career. A commonly used story element, of course, but that’s mostly where the cliches end. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the two tumble into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a strange force starts to affect the duo. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past simple connection.

The entire film is a slow burn fright fest, blending moments of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes during something horrific). The director weaves these elements together neatly and delivers them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his floundering music career inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and distant from his network of friends. He fears the notion of completely losing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is amplified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie never makes either of his characters the clear bad guy.

Both characters face the sort of issues that are inherent in long-term unions a decade in. Fundamentally, they continue to care for one another. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these anxieties of codependency and giving oneself over to another person, the symbolism avoids being hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Conversely, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could act as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the finale sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply look at your partner and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform now.
